Competition in a market economy drives innovation and benefits customers. For the longest time (following their acquisition by Cisco), WebEx was stagnant and did not offer any new features other than the table stakes ones. Even their video quality was spotty and I have attended numerous meetings over the years in which attendees would steadfastly refuse to try the video button.
And, then Zoom happened. They matched WebEx on the table stakes features, but innovated in their backend to enable high-quality video conferencing. Coupled with Zoom Rooms, their approach was significantly better (and cheaper) than what Cisco tried with their Tele Presence products for years.
More recently, Zoom introduced background filters for video conferencing. I'd imagine this increased the number of users turning on video as they could hide their messy office background with a professional background (quite often incorporating their corporate signage). Teams followed suit and even good old WebEx woke up from their slumber to support this feature. You'd think they would have figured it out years ago given their early start in this space.
I'm quite thrilled about the energy in this space fueled by Zoom's market cap and to a certain extent the Covid-19 pandemic. It will be good to see if WebEx allows interoperability with Virtual Webcam drivers like the one we use in MeetingCaddy. All other services interoperate nicely with it, but not WebEx.
